NC Republicans Override Governor Cooper's Veto Once Again, And Possibly For The Last Time

Governor Cooper urged the legislature not to override his Veto on a bill that deals with confidentiality on campaign finance investigations

On Thursday afternoon North Carolina lawmakers decided to override Governor Coopers' veto on a bill that will allow the state elections board to keep confidential any allegations of campaign fundraising law violations.

This is because of the Super Majority the republicans hold in the legislature, which will change this coming year.

The Super Majority has allowed Republicans to override Coopers vetoes time and time again, but soon the Republicans will only hold a simple majority.

That still allows them to have the majority of the power, but not enough votes to override vetoes.

Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper said he vetoed the measure because it added new confidentiality requirements for campaign finance investigations.

The law also dictates that a separate commission will secretly review whether prosecutors are notified of such investigations.

Defending the confidentiality provision, Republican State Rep. Sarah Stevens says politicians need the opportunity to offer their side before unproven allegations become public.

The bill didn't only mention campaign fundraising. It also will affect the country's last undecided congressional race.

The law will require new primaries and a new general election in North Carolina's 9th Congressional District if the state elections board looking into an ongoing case of ballot fraud decides it's necessary.
