GREENSBORO, N.C.-- A ten-year-old Triad boy is making it his mission to make sure his classmates have food to eat year round.
William Martin is a 4th grader at Jesse Wharton Elementary with a heart of gold.
He's started a project called "No Kid Will Go Hungry." He's collecting canned goods to stock his school's food bank.
William knows that some of his classmates rely on school for breakfast and lunch. But in the summer, that's not always guaranteed.
"It makes me feel really sad and depressed," he said.
William has already received 4 bags worth of food in a red bucket he keeps on his front porch.
"It's amazing to know that he has so much support and to know that so many people actually want to help because there's a lot of kids that wake up in the morning and are starving," his mother Christine Martin said.
The food will eventually be distributed to families throughout the summer.
This isn't the first time William has helped his fellow classmates either. Last summer, he raised $280 dollars at a lemonade stand. He used to money to fill 20 backpacks with school supplies.
His efforts earned him special visits from local officers and firefighters. He even received a letter from a businessman who matched the money he raised.
This year, his focus is on food.
"I want people to know that when they're donating, no kid will go hungry." William said.
If you would like to donate, you can bring canned or non-perishable goods to Jesse Wharton Elementary or give funds through this gofundme account.
