WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — Sirens went off at a nuclear power plant in Holly Springs, NC early Monday morning, but officials want the public to know there is no emergency.

Wake County officials said the sirens went off at Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant shortly before 8 a.m. About a half-hour later, officials confirmed there was no emergency. The reason the sirens went off hasn't been determined.

“Emergency Management is working with Duke Energy to determine the cause,” Wake County officials said in an announcement.

People who live in the area also got alerted on their cell phones.

The Harris Task Force said if this had been a real emergency, more information would have been provided by the station.

The power plant previously alerted the community that testing was scheduled for Wednesday, July 10.
