Small streaming services are doing better than ever before. But could that bubble burst?

We all know the major streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. But smaller, more niche, options keep popping up.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It seems like there’s a streaming service for just about everything now. Don’t expect that to end anytime soon.

Niche streaming services are doing better than ever before.

We all know the major streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. But smaller, more niche, options keep popping up.

Holiday movies, horror movies, and anime now all have their own streaming offers.

In a time when people have expressed frustration over the growing options, it’s still working. The New York Times cited a report from subscription research firm Antenna, saying 24.5 million people bought at least one niche streaming subscription in the second quarter of 2022.

In the second quarter of 2024, that exploded to 51.4 million.

Data also shows subscriptions for small streamers grew 27% in 2023, and 20% so far this year. That’s actually outpacing the big streamers.

However, cancellation rates remain a concern. Those numbers are higher for specialty streamers compared to the major ones.
