GREENSBORO, N.C. — Imagine you're at home around 1 a.m. You hear a loud crash coming from your front door, only to find it kicked in and vandalized. This is what's been happening in several neighborhoods around Greensboro.
A worrying TikTok trend is scaring people in the area. The trend involves kicking in people's front doors and running away.
In a video shared online, two people, one wearing a mask, are seen kicking open the front door of a home and sprinting away. The Greensboro Police Department says it is investigating what many are calling a TikTok trend, where homes are being vandalized.
People who live in Sunset Hills and Lindley Park said it’s both upsetting and frightening. Some worry that eventually, someone could get hurt.
"Thankfully, no one has been hurt thus far," she said. "It certainly does concern me. This is an old neighborhood, and consequently, a lot of the doors have 15 panes of glass in them, very easily accessible," said Anne Vaughan.
Vaughan says she is especially worried for those who live alone in the area. She can only imagine how terrifying it was for her neighbor just a few nights ago. She also believes that more police patrolling the neighborhood at night would help.
"But by the time these young folks are kicking in the doors, they just do it and immediately run away. So it's hard to catch anybody, and for them to be prosecuted," Vaughan added.
This disturbing trend isn’t isolated to Greensboro. Reports suggest that it's happening in cities across the country.
