WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A little extra cash any time of year is good, but a few weeks right before Christmas, well, it makes it feel like Christmas!
The NC State Treasurer presented Winston-Salem State University with a massive check today. The posterboard-sized check was for show, but the real check amounted to more than $180,000. The money comes from the State Treasurer's Office Department of Unclaimed Cash.
This story comes full circle because Treasurer Folwell took courses at Winston-Salem State in 1981. He even had his student ID to show us! A member of his staff learned he went there and the staff member looked up the university in the database and that's what led to this check presentation.
"Merry Christmas to everybody. And this is a great Christmas present for Winston-Salem State University," said Dale Folwell, NC State Treasurer.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT NCCASH.COM IS?
It's a program through the State Treasurer's Office, where all unclaimed cash and property are kept. This could be security deposits you made and never got back, insurance payments, or refunds you were owed.
Searching and getting your unclaimed cash is free, all you have to do is put your name into NCcash.com. In fact, you can put in the name of your family members, your church, organization, school, or business.
"All of your viewers as they've done in the past need to go there and check their name, maiden kids, parents, church, business name, any name they can think of. Checking and getting your unclaimed cash from the state is free," said Folwell.
Don't Google the words 'unclaimed' and 'cash'. Chances are you'll end up on a third-party site that will charge you. Only search your name on NCcash.com. If you have money, you'll be asked to verify your Social Security number to verify the money is going to the right person.
