RALEIGH, N.C. — The NC State Capitol building has reopened to the public on Monday morning for the first time since last spring. Closing in May of last year, the Raleigh historical landmark was originally closed for a year-long restoration project. Crews replaced the building's air conditioning systems along with its roof and outer stone.

Site administrator Terra Schramm told CBS affiliate CBS17 that this is the first time the building's roof has been replaced in more than 50 years. This is the third time it's been replaced since its opening in 1840.

“We’ve got to take care of the exterior of a historic building,” Schramm told CBS17. “If water and things come inside of the building, it really damages the historic interior."

The building's last repairs were finished in June.

According to state officials, around 100,000 people visit the Capitol each year.
