GREENSBORO, N.C. — Roads and bridges in the Triad are in need of updates and construction improvements.

TRIP, a national transportation research nonprofit in Washington D.C., just released a September 2024 report. It found that 12% of major roads in the Triad area are in poor condition. Approximately 27% of major roads in the Triad were found to be in mediocre condition.

The report concluded that 6% of bridges in the Triad are in structurally poor condition, and there was significant deterioration to bridge decks, supports, and other major components.

Beyond the Triad, other North Carolina urban areas revealed their roads and bridges were not structurally sound. These conditions can cause roads and highways to become congested, which leads to lost time and money for drivers. TRIP estimates poor road conditions will cost North Carolina drivers $4 billion in wasted fuel and time in 2024. For the Triad, the report found the average driver loses 27 hours to traffic congestion, leading to a loss of $592 annually.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has plans to address traffic congestion and road safety, according to the report. The NC DOT expects to increase its annual investment in roadway and bridge preservation by 17% and 22% respectively, as a result of increased state and federal transportation revenue.

"North Carolina’s transportation infrastructure is essential to moving goods and people safely and efficiently,” Gary Salamido, president and CEO of the NC Chamber, said.

The NC DOT said in a statement to WFMY News 2 that they appreciate any discussions on ways to fund transportation in North Carolina and have partnered with the NC Chamber along with other public-private partners to find sustainable funding solutions for declining transportation revenues.
