NORTH CAROLINA, USA — The North Carolina Department of Transportation is warning of a recent scam in which victims were targeted for tolls via text message.
NCDOT said the North Carolina Turnpike Authority was notified of the text message-based scam known as “smishing.”

The targeted phone numbers seem randomly chosen and are not uniquely associated with an account or usage of toll roads.
