NORTH CAROLINA, USA — The North Carolina DMV will begin charging a processing fee on all transactions paid with a credit or debit card starting on July 1.
This will include in-person, online, and self-service kiosk purchases.
The fee charged for in-person transactions will be 1.22%; online transactions will be 1.85% and kiosk transactions will be 2%, according to the NC DMV. If you want to avoid the fee, you can pay with cash, money order, or check.
State law requires the transaction fee. HOUSE BILL 259: 2023 Appropriations Act, Sec. 41.14E required the DMV to develop a plan for adding a fee to transactions where it accepts electronic payments such as credit and debit cards.
The DMV plan includes a contract with a company called PayIt. The software company charges a service fee of up to 2% for online credit and debit card purchases.
This law makes it so the DMV, and therefore all state taxpayers, will not absorb the cost of the card transactions. Only those who pay with a card will pay the fee.
But not just a credit card fee is coming in July, drivers will pay a bit more for their licenses as well. The NC DMV is able to adjust fees every four years. Here's a breakdown the fees.
