Patricia Roberts dreads this time of year. "I just got a little depressed and I was feeling a little low-key today."
The Greensboro woman is often reminded of April 28th. It was this week 19 years ago that her son Robert, better known as Mickey, was murdered. Still, no one's been arrested for the crime.
"I think about him every day, particularly when it's his anniversary and birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas because he loved a Christmas tree," said Roberts.
Even after 19 years, it's hard to believe he's gone. "You just want to tell him to come back” said Roberts. “It's almost like I just cannot believe that he is gone. He was my baby boy."
The 29-year-old was found shot to death in the doorway of his apartment in the Overland Heights area of Greensboro. His case is considered cold but still active by Greensboro Police. There's even a reward for information of up to $7,000.
Since his death, Patricia has been organizing marches and keeping Mickey's name and story out there in the hopes someone will come forward.
As the anniversary of his death approaches, she's hopeful there will be answers soon. "It puts a real big burden on you to live with this every day, day by day, year by year,” said Roberts. “And the longer it goes, it seems like the tougher it gets."
Patricia knows finding the killer won't give her complete closure, but she hopes it will help. "I can truly say that it's not going to take away everything,” said Roberts. “I would just feel better knowing who did it and why they did it."
Patricia says she went to his grave Tuesday, just like she's done every year since he was murdered. She brought flowers and a balloon that read "you're so special."
