Driver charged with DWI after deadly crash involving a moped in Winston-Salem, police say

A man who was driving while impaired hit and killed a moped driver on Reynolda Road in Winston-Salem, police say.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A man accused of driving while impaired hit and killed a man on a moped in Winston-Salem Wednesday morning, police said. 

Officers said around 11:12 a.m., 65-year-old Walter Lee Ship Jr., the driver of a Ford F-150 truck, was traveling north on Reynolda Road while the moped was heading south. As Ship Jr. was making a left turn into a shopping center, he hit 76-year-old J Jesus Chavez Arceo. 

Police said Arceo, the driver of the moped died at the scene.

After an investigation, detectives said Ship Jr. was arrested and charged with Driving While Impaired. 

Ship Jr. was placed on a $50,000.00 secured bond. His next court date is scheduled for Jan. 13, 2024.
