DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — A father and daughter involved in the killing of Irish Businessman, Jason Corbett, will be released from prison a few weeks earlier than planned.
WFMY News 2 learned Thursday that Molly Corbett and Tom Martens' release date is now set for Thursday, June 6 - bumped up three weeks earlier than planned.
The North Carolina Department of Corrections said, “On Tuesday, we received amended judgment and commitment documents from the court in Davidson County for both Thomas Martens and Molly Martens Corbett. Both were amended to include 21 additional days of time served, to correctly reflect the actual number of days served during their first incarcerations. The additional 21 days of time served moves the release dates for both to June 6, 2024. The updated release dates are reflected on the NCDAC website.”
Previously, the two were expected to get out of prison on June 27.
Molly Corbett and her father Tom Martens were resentenced in November after the North Carolina Supreme Court reversed their 2017 second-degree murder convictions and ordered a new trial.
In the new trial, they were sentenced to spend between 51-74 months behind bars after pleading to voluntary manslaughter.
However, both were only expected to serve seven months because of a good behavior sentencing reduction during the 44 months they already served, according to their attorneys.
In the original trial, the daughter and father were sentenced to 20-25 years.
Molly's husband Jason Corbett died at the family home in Davidson County in 2015. Investigators said Molly and her father killed Jason.
Defense attorneys have said the two were acting in self-defense.
