Men Plead Guilty, Sentenced In 1996 Murder Of NC Officer

JONESVILLE, N.C.-- Monday in Yadkin County Superior Court, two men faced a judge and admitted their part in the murder of a sworn police officer more than 16 years ago. Both men pleaded guilty in the cold case murder of Sgt. Gregory Martin during a traffic stop on October 5, 1996.

Sgt. Gregory Keith Martin was shot and killed around 2:00 a.m. on I-77 after stopping a truck.

Brian Eugene Whittaker pleaded guilty to 2nd Degree Murder, Attempted Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, Conspiracy to Commit Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Felony Possession of Stolen Goods.

Whittaker was sentenced to 168-211 months in prison.

Marc Peterson Oldroyd pleaded guilty to 2nd Degree Murder, Attempted Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Conspiracy to Commit Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon.

Oldroyd was sentenced to 120-153 months in prison.

Scott Vincent Sica who was a third suspect was sentenced in March to life in prison without parole.

Local, state and federal officers never gave up hope of finding those responsible for Martin's death. After years of searching and investigating, the three men were arrested in October 2012.
