MEBANE, N.C. — It may not look like much now, because it’s not yet. But eventually, a shopping center, retail stores and even apartments could sit on nearly 90 acres of land that is situated near the Mebane Buc-ee's site.
Mebane’s Mayor told WFMY News 2's Nixon Norman the land has been purchased and approved for development, it’s just gonna take some time to work out logistics.
The piece of land now owned by Koury Corporations sits on Trollingwood-Hawfield Road in front of Gregory Poole Equipment Company.
Mebane’s Mayor Ed Hooks said Koury Corporation plans to set aside about 30 acres for the shopping center side of things.
As for residential development, he said the company is looking to build 12 apartment buildings in the area.
There was some online chatter and rumors of a Target shopping center coming to Mebane but Mayor Hooks says no one knows what will specifically go there just yet.
“The fact is, we do not know who it is. Several months ago, a developer on the other end of Trollingwood was looking to put together a shopping center of which he was saying it could possibly be a Target and other things but I cannot confirm or deny the Target rumor and they have not told us what it is,” said Hooks
Again, Mayor Hooks said something is coming, but first, they need to iron out things like traffic flow.
This development is set to go across the highway from where Buc-ee’s will eventually sit. Buc-ee’s is being built on the southwest corner of I-40 and this development will be built on the northeast side.
“Traffic… though is an issue we’re concerned about, but I think with DOT, and with our staff, we can overcome and make sure that traffic will flow very well," said Hooks
Hooks said Mebane has seen plenty of industrial and residential wins in the past few years, now it’s time to focus on commercial development here in the area.
