Fentanyl victims' photos unveiled on billboard in McLeansville

The billboard on Mount Hope Church Road shows the lives cut short because of the drug fentanyl.

MCLEANSVILLE, N.C. — A new billboard recognizing victims lost to fentanyl was unveiled Sunday in McLeansville.

It was put up by Race Against Drugs - a non-profit dedicated to helping people who are battling addiction and trying to raise awareness of the fentanyl crisis.

The billboard on Mount Hope Church Road shows pictures of different people who lost their lives to fentanyl. Loved ones and friends of the victims attended the unveiling.

Debbie Peeden lost her granddaughter to the drug.

"You have to keep on fighting to bring awareness of fentanyl poisoning to other families so that they don't go through what she's gone through and what I've gone through," Peeden said.

Mike Loomis, the founder of Race Against Drugs, said the billboard is a way to honor the lives cut short.

"We honor these kids today that are up on that billboard - that's what it does," he said. "And it breaks my heart. I feel for every one of these families out here."

The billboard shows ten different victims. There's also a yard sign showing more than 15 others.
