GREENSBORO, N.C. — A giant car recall has drivers all over the country on alert.
Honda and Acura recently recalled 2.6 million cars. The problem - the manufacturer doesn't even have the part ready.
WFMY News 2's Nixon Norman is breaking down what car owners should know.
This recall impacts 21 different models. Here's the list:
If you own a Honda or Acura, you might've received a recall letter in the mail recently asking for your patience.
The recall letter said the fuel pump module can over time deform and cause the engine to stall while driving, which could be a serious safety hazard.
The company is asking for patience because the parts used to fix this issue might not be available until the fall.
"This could lead to a problem, whether or not a problem has actually been identified or not and automakers and the federal government are clear on that. That even if it just could lead to a problem, they need to issue a recall," Patrick Olsen with CARFAX said.
While you wait, Olson said you should first reach out to your local dealership and see if there's anything they can do to help. Then, call Honda corporate. He says if your situation is dire enough, they might help you but he also says don't panic.
"I wouldn't let the concept of potential failure years from now stop me from driving today. But if I did experience trouble with stalling or loss of power, I would absolutely go to the dealership today and talk to Honda tomorrow," Olsen said.
It's important to note there have been no reported crashes or injuries related to this issue. Olsen said if you have a fuel pump issue, you need to drive directly to a dealership.
Even if your car isn't on the list, Olson said Honda and Acura owners should still take a look at their vin to see if there are any open recalls.
