Man dies in house fire on Christmas day in Winston-Salem

Amir Leslie, 10, and his family noticed the fire while they were visiting family next door. They were able to save one of the dogs in the fire.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A man is dead after a tragic house fire that happened on Christmas Day.

Fire officials said 52-year-old Christopher Jenkins died Monday after his house caught fire on Brookway Drive in Winston-Salem.

The fire was noticed by 10-year-old Amir Leslie when he and his family were visiting their grandparents for Christmas dinner when he noticed the neighboring house in flames.

Amir and his older brothers tried to break down the door of the burning home. They were able to save one of Jenkins' dogs before the situation became too dangerous.

Amir said his parents and grandparents taught him always to call 911 when something serious happens and this isn't the first time he's had to make the nerve-racking call.

"They always tell me if something serious is happening call 911," said Amir, his mother Shereka Leslie continued. "He saw a man laying out in the bushes back in Winston-Salem and called 911 in that incident. So, he knows. he's been knowing what to do for some years now."

This investigation is ongoing.
