BURLINGTON, N.C. — Amtrak said two people, including a Burlington man, were hit and killed by the same train traveling through North Carolina.

The first crash happened Thursday night in Burlington. Around five hours later, the second crash happened in Charlotte early Friday morning. Amtrak said both incidents involved Amtrak Train 79.

Burlington police said a man was walking on the tracks near York Road and Oak Avenue when he was hit by a train coming from the opposite direction. Police said the train tried slowing down and sounding its horn to alert the man. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The railway was closed for around three hours.

Then early Friday morning, Amtrak said a person was hit by the same train in Charlotte. Medics pronounced that person dead at the scene. Amtrak said the train was on its way from Charlotte to New York.

Amtrak said they are working with law enforcement to investigate the incidents.
