SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — A man is charged with a misdemeanor after an 8-year-old was found dead in Surry County in February, deputies say.
Timothy James Gertsch was served with storage or a firearm to protect a minor. Investigators say the incident was determined accidental.
The Surry County Sheriff's Office said they received a call about an unresponsive child who was not breathing on Old Lowgap Road shortly before 1 p.m. on February 23.
When deputies and first responders arrived on the scene, they found the child dead from a gunshot wound.
Deputies at the scene requested the assistance of the Criminal Investigation Division and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
Deputies said this was an isolated incident.
The investigation is ongoing.
