MACON, Ga. — You might remember the story of Christian Williams.
Only hours before he was set to go on trial for the murder of Greg Watkins, a video was released showing him being dragged from his front lawn in the early hours of March 6.
For the past 7 months, he's been missing.
Now, the Bibb County Sheriff's Office is confirming that Williams shot himself during a raid in the 2000 block of Vineville Avenue, which the sheriff's office said was connected to the search for the four inmates who escaped from the Bibb County Jail.
At around 7 a.m. Monday morning, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force tried to enter an apartment at The Pines on Vineville at 2020 Vineville Ave.
As Marshals attempted to enter, a gunshot rang out. They say Williams shot at the Marshals through the door of the apartment, according to Bibb County Sheriff David Davis. The Marshals moved back and called the Bibb County SWAT Team to help.
When the SWAT team arrived, a person who was inside the apartment told them that Williams had shot himself, the press release said.
According to Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones, Williams died at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Atrium Health Navicent in Macon from a gunshot wound to the head.
According to Davis, they were at the apartment to try and question him about the four men who escaped from the Bibb County Jail last Monday. They say his involvement in the escape of the four inmates is still under investigation.
Another person was arrested during the raid. According to jail records, Mykia Williams — who is William's girlfriend — was charged with aiding or permitting another to escape lawful custody or confinement. It is a felony charge.
Who is Christian Williams?
Williams was out on $100,000 bond when video appeared to show him being kidnapped by two men in the early hours of the morning.
He was supposed to be tracked by Anytime Bail, which was contracted by the county, but apparently, the ankle monitor had run out of battery. They then suspended the company for 90 days.
According to previous reporting, both the sheriff's office and the district attorney's office did not find out about William's alleged kidnapping until 9:20 a.m. when William's defense attorney shared surveillance footage of the apparent kidnapping.
In April 2021, Greg Watkins was shot and killed outside of the Quick Serve convenience store at 584 Emery Highway.
It happened just before 10 p.m., and Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said that the 27-year-old man was shot several times while inside the store.
Later, Williams was arrested and charged with Watkins' murder.
According to Davis, the company did not notify the sheriff's office that the battery on Williams's ankle monitor was dead, and they didn't tell Williams to change the battery.
