LEXINGTON, N.C. — A Lexington war veteran will be honored this Veterans Day in his hometown.
A historical marker will be unveiled recognizing Lt. Gen. Robert Sink in the heart of uptown Lexington on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The career U.S. Army officer served in both World War II and the Korean War. During World War II, Sink served in significant missions such as D-Day, the Arnhem Campaign, the defense of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, and the advance into Germany.
Sink was praised by his men for his leadership, who nicknamed him “The Five-Oh-Sink.”
Actor Dale Dye portrayed him in the television mini-series “Band of Brothers.”
Sink died at Fort Bragg, now Fort Liberty, in 1965. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
