LEXINGTON, N.C. — Lexington Senior High School released students early Friday because of excessive heat in classrooms, according to a Facebook post by the school.
Students were dismissed at 12 p.m. after spending the final 20 minutes of the day on an adjusted schedule. Temperatures have been in the 80s in Lexington throughout the day, but feel like temperatures have hovered around 90 degrees and above.
Lexington Senior High isn't the only school reportedly struggling with heat-related issues. On Thursday, Guilford County Schools Director of Media Relations Gabby Brown sent WFMY News 2 the following statement after we enquired about possible air conditioning issues at a local school:
"The first days of school are also the last days of summer, and often our HVAC units struggle to keep our buildings fully cooled in all areas. Our maintenance crews are working to prioritize and address these issues as quickly as possible. In the meantime, we ask that parents send their students to school dressed for warm temperatures or in layers that can be removed. If needed, fans or portable A/C units will be brought in, or students may be relocated to cooler spaces.
Over the summer, the Building Services Department completed nearly 2,000 work orders to address pressing facility needs ahead of the new school year. The team also completed more than two dozen HVAC replacements.
School will not be dismissed or canceled unless more than 50% of a school has a sustained temperature of at least 85 degrees."
