Blind jazz player plays message of hope for those in need

Neill Clegg, 76, is legally blind. Despite this, every Thursday Clegg plays at the Healing Gardens at Cone Health's Wesley Long Hospital to help patients heal.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Finding your purpose is timeless

"I thought we were signing up to play football and I was signing up for the band," said Neill Clegg, man who plays jazz music for those at Cone Health Hospital.

Since he was 11 years old, Neill Clegg has been playing instruments. Clegg was also a professor at UNCG's musical department for years.

"I play all the woodwinds, flute and clarinet and saxophone. I had, and I played the elbow a little bit but I traded my elbow in on this thing."

Clegg is legally blind but despite this, the Saxophonist is using his talent to help those mend.

"I play tunes that I like that I think are popular and I just try to make their time here more pleasant."

He's no stranger to Cone Health.

Years ago, his wife Victoria was once a patient at the hospital undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer.

He would perform for her and today he's glad to share she's doing well but his good deed to helping her heal didn't stop there.

Every Thursday, Clegg plays the saxophone here at the healing gardens outside of Cone Health's Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro for visitors and volunteers, like his neighbor and friend Bud Strickland.

"I can say most of the volunteers are either cancer survivors or touched by cancer so its a personal thing and since Neill has started playing for us it has made it even better because we can hear him wherever we are in the garden working."

From Classical to Jazz, Clegg is providing comfort for those in need one musical note at a time.

Fun Fact: Clegg also plays each Thursday night at the O. Henry Hotel in Greensboro from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
