Lawsuit filed against Rockingham County after rezoning decision

Camp Carefree and several others filed a lawsuit earlier this month making several accusations about a rezoning decision made over the summer.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — A group in Rockingham County filed a lawsuit to try to reverse a rezoning decision.

You might remember the county changing zoning laws for a plot of land off Highway 220 over the summer.

It did so as part of the efforts to recruit a casino to our area.

Some people want that decision changed. So, Camp Carefree and several others filed a lawsuit earlier this month.

The rezoned land sits right next to the camp for children with special needs.

In the lawsuit, the group made several accusations against the county.

They alleged that the county did not follow the right procedures to approve rezoning, didn't give people enough time to weigh in, and worked too closely with the casino developers.

They said each of those actions makes the rezoning decision invalid, and the state should reverse it.
