Keith Carter Sentenced To Maximum Of 21 Years In Prison

Carter spoke prior to sentencing for the first time in court. He was convicted for the shooting death of Winston-Salem Police Sgt. Howard Plouff.

North Carolina Sentencing Guidelines.A jury returned the verdict of second degree murder at 5:30 pm on Thursday. During the trial, the prosecution presented information to the jury that portrayed Carter as angry following a fight inside the club.  They say he went to his car following the altercation and fired his gun outside the club.  A ballistics expert testified that the bullet that killed Sergeant Plouff came from Carter's gun.The defense made a surprise move on Wednesday by not calling any witnesses.  In cross examination of the medical examiner on Tuesday, defense attorney David Freedman asked if the bullet that killed Plouff may have come from a shot fired in the air. The sentencing phase of the trial will begin on Friday. Before deliberations began on Wednesday members of the jury asked for copies of the possible verdicts and the law as it applies in this case. They received those copies Thursday morning.Around noon on Thursday, jurors asked for a transcript of Brandon Horne's testimony.  Horne is a friend of Keith Carter that was with him the night of the shooting. The judge denied the request and told the jurors to rely on their memory.Winston-Salem police have extra patrols around the courthouse to ensure people leave in an orderly fashion once the verdict is read.  They say it is a precaution in a high-profile case.RELATED STORIESDeliberations Resume In Keith Carter Trial Attorney: Keith Carter Will Not Testify In Trial Trial Update: Jury Hears Tape Of Interviewed Suspect Officers Testify In Winston-Salem Murder Trial Plouff's Murder Trial Underway, Widow First One Called To Testify  />
