GREENSBORO, N.C. — Following multiple carjackings, robberies, and a deadly shooting where an off-duty Greensboro officer was killed, Sheetz said it will be adding K-9 units to several locations in the Triad.
The gas station chain said this security measure is being added so customers and employees feel safer at their stores.
Signs are posted at three Sheetz locations across Greensboro. The signs warn people that K-9 units are on gas station grounds for people's safety. This comes after several locations have seen their share of trouble and crime, including the death of Greensboro Police Sergeant Dale Nix; he was shot and killed after he tried to stop a robbery.
Also, near the end of 2023, two carjackings happened at two different Sheetz locations. One happened at the gas station on New Garden Road and the other on West Wendover Avenue.
A spokesperson with Sheetz shared the following statement:
"The safety of our customers and employees at Sheetz is a top priority. We continually assess which stores need additional support and have implemented supplemental security measures, including K-9 units, at several Greensboro store locations as an additional safety measure," Nick Ruffner, a PR Manager for Sheetz, shared.
The Sheetz on Spring Garden Street, West Wendover Avenue, and West Market Street now have the K-9 signs posted.
Sheetz customer, Christopher Harper wonders why Sheetz decided to use K-9's as opposed to security companies.
"I feel like that's something that can be controlled by not dogs. You've got places like Allied Security who goes around Friendly Shopping Center until 11 o'clock. So, why can't you take them jobs?" explained Harper.
"I don't see it posing a threat. As far as other citizens around the City of Greensboro they all have their own opinions on how they want to look at it. Some people have fears about dogs some people don't," said Sheetz Customer, Keith Kent.
There are mixed reactions to the new security measure, and as of right now more questions than answers.
The logo for the company American K-9 Interdictions is on the signs at Sheetz.
We reached out to them to see how the operation would work and are waiting to hear back.
