Here are a few things you might not know about baseball that truly shows just how American it is from the USDA.

  1. All official MLB baseballs are made from leather tanned in Tennessee from hides processed in Pennsylvania.
  2. Approximately 2.4 million baseballs are made each year from 20,000 hides, about 120 balls per hide.
  3. A majority of MLB baseball bats come from lumber in northern Pennsylvania and southern New York.
  4. If you're eating popcorn this season at a ballpark, there is a good chance it came from the Cornhusker state, as Nebraska consistently ranks no. 1 in popcorn production.
  5. According to Peanut Farmers, fans of the Dodgers, Royals, Astros, Angels and Mets eat the most inshell peanuts at the ballpark.
  6. 28 of 30 Major League Baseball stadiums have natural grass on their playing fields, thanks to America’s 1,738 farms that produce sod.
