'It's bittersweet' | Triad Duke fans gather to watch Coach K's last home game

A Greensboro pub hosted one of many Triad watch parties for Coach K's last Battle of the Blues.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Triad Duke basketball fans gathered together to watch Duke Men's basketball play their last home game with Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski at the helm Saturday.

It will also be Coach K's last matchup against the UNC Tarheels.

"I feel like I’ve had a pit in my stomach all day," Hayley Sanon said.

Sanon is a former Dancing Devil and 2017 Duke grad. She lives in Washington D.C. now but was raised as a Duke fan in Winston-Salem.

"My entire life, Coach K has been synonymous with Duke and with college basketball," Sanon said. "To think this is his last season, his last home game, his last UNC game, and last time being in Cameron Indoor Stadium it just really hits differently."

Through the highs and the lows, Duke fans turned out to cheer for the Blue Devils in Coach K's last home game.

"I love Coach K. He's a great man of integrity," Lisa Waye said.

Waye is among the fans who came to one Greensboro bar with a special tie to the University.

Duke's Pub is named after one of it's four owners, Michael Duke, but another owner is a long-time Duke fan.

Mike Bowers love for Duke is hard to miss.

"I even named my daughter Cameron, after Cameron Indoor Stadium," Bowers said. "I've got all my flags up and my Coach K bobblehead on the bar. It means a lot to be here."

Others made special arrangements to watch the game. Sanon watched the game from Texas. She's there for a fellow Duke alum's wedding.

The bride and groom pushed back their rehearsal dinner so guests wouldn't miss the action.

"It's bittersweet and it's strange to think about the next era of Duke basketball," Sanon said.

The game ended with Duke losing to the Tarheels but fans said they're grateful for more than 40 years of wins and leadership.

"Coach K, you are an amazing man. You've had an amazing run over the years," Waye said.

"He's the greatest of all time," Bowers said."I'm going to miss him."

Coach K is retiring after a phenomenal career. The university named associate head coach Jon Scheyer as Krzyzewski’s successor for the 2022-23 season.
