GREENSBORO, N.C. — There are thousands and thousands of safety deposit boxes in banks all over the state of North Carolina. What's in them? Well, everything from jewelry that is fit for a queen to real silver silverware and coins dating back to the 1800's.
"We have all kinds of items that are sitting at NCcash.com that are physical properties. We are beginning the process of trying to auction some of those off. Maybe by doing this people can find something that belongs to them," said Dale Folwell, NC State Treasurer.
The Safe Deposit Box content auction is the latest way for the NC State Treasurer's office to get unclaimed property into the right hands. This auction has 40 items and is live online until April 4, 2024. Of those 40 items, you'll even find a random assortment of baseball cards, (a Ken Griffey Junior and a Cal Ripken Junior are in there!) along with a book about Dianna, Princess of Wales.
"When someone hasn't paid a lockbox fee and the financial institution has exhausted all their means to find the person, all the money and property goes back into NCcash.com," said Folwell.
Maybe nothing interests you in the online auction, but don't skip searching your name in the NCcash.com database. It's free to search and claim your money.
