STOKES COUNTY, N.C. -- The motto "In God We Trust" will soon be on the Stokes County courthouse in Danbury.

Stokes County Manager Rick Morris said commissioners unanimously approved the request made at their meeting on April 13.

The request was made by the U.S. Motto Committee group. The group offered to pay to put the motto on the building, with no cost to the county or to citizens.

Morris says there is no set date on when the motto will be put on the building. The U.S. Motto Committee has to submit a plan to him first and then it must be approved.ID=25546623

WFMY News 2 uncovered the motto movement started in 2002 in Davidson County. The county voted to add the phrase to its government building and the ACLU tried to stop it. A district court and court of appeals however, upheld the move. Then the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the appeal, which gave Davidson County the green light.

In Alamance County commissioners approved adding the same motto to three of their government buildings in early April. These buildings include the Alamance County Administration Building in Graham, the Criminal Courts Building and the County Commissioners meeting room.

No word yet on when the phrase will be added. Committee members hope to add the phrase to all government buildings throughout the state. The additions will be completely paid for by private donations.
