Where is Hurricane Beryl now? Will it impact the United States?

Still a strong Category 4 Storm, Beryl takes aim for Jamaica & Cayman Islands

GREENSBORO, N.C. —

Tropics are active in the Atlantic...

Hurricane Beryl is the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season and the earliest Category 5  hurricane on record. Records date back all the way to 1851!

The storm weakened some Sunday evening but strengthened early Monday as it made landfall in the Windward Islands. Beryl is now in the eastern Caribbean and takes aim at Jamaica where a Hurricane Warning has been issued. Beryl maintains its strength as an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 140 mph.

Record-warm waters, around 3-4 degrees above average (similar to August), are able to act as fuel for the tropical systems to strengthen rapidly.

Beryl currently is moving into the Caribbean bringing continued life-threatening winds and dangerous storm surge conditions for Jamaica and the Cayman Islands on Wednesday where a Hurricane Warning is in effect. The Yucatan Peninsula will also be monitored as Beryl continues westward. Additional warnings / watches will likely be required in the next day or so.

If Beryl continues on its forecast track, it'll weaken due to interaction with wind shear and land by the time it makes it to the Yucatan Peninsula. If it is able to survive, it could possibly bring Tropical Storm conditions to southern parts of Texas. For now, we'll keep a watchful eye.
