How NC Megasites Stack Up

4,000 jobs and a $1.6 billion investment. You don't need us to tell you what a win it would be for the Triad if Toyota-Mazda decided to build its next plant at the Greensboro-Randolph megasite.

Experts say the site is on a short list, but it's still too soon to tell where exactly they might plant roots. Bloomberg reports North Carolina and Alabama are the top contenders.

North Carolina is home to four marketable megasites, including the Greensboro-Randolph site, the Chatham-Siler City Advanced Manufacturing Site, the Moncure Megasite and the Kingsboro CSX Select Megasite.

The state tries to market them together, touting business climate, a skilled workforce, quality of life and location.

All sites have access to major highways, airports (both international and regional), railways and power hookups.

The largest is the Moncure Megasite with 2,500 acres. That's followed by the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite after a recent vote to add 370 acres. The site is now about 1,900 acres. Chatham-Siler City is next at 1,800 acres. The Kingsboro site is close to 1,500 acres.

State economic leaders in North Carolina hope the proximity of the megasites will be an attractive factor for businesses who want to continue growing.

A win for one, would be a win for all.
