Staying hydrated doesn't mean just drinking glass after glass of water

It depends. But the best way to stay hydrated is to eat and drink your water.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — With the extreme heat, you're going to be told by experts to 'stay hydrated'. But what does that mean? Do you need to drink your weight in water?

"Nearly everything we eat has some water in it. Soups, smoothies, and coffee and tea supply fluids. Fruits and vegetables count towards your fluid requirements," said Amy Keating, Consumer Reports

Check it out:

1 small wedge of watermelon: 7 ounces of water                                                                                                                                   1 large peach:  5 ounces of water
1 cup of cucumber: 4 ounces of water

The water counts, even if it's not in a cup.

Most men need about 15 and a half cups of fluids a day and women need about 11 and 1/3 cups.

So, what about sports drinks that claim to be ultra-hydrating? CR says if you're exercising for longer than an hour, you might benefit from the electrolytes they contain. Otherwise, you probably don't need them.

While sodas are a liquid, experts say to stay away from sugary drinks, they're full of empty calories.

One last note, did you know being hydrated helps you look younger?

"Chronic dehydration can accelerate the aging process," said a Consumer Reports expert.

That's right, when you are dehydrated your skin looks dull, uneven, and wrinkled. Drink or eat your water to look younger.
