Does your dog need to drink more water? Here's an easy way to keep them hydrated

In the summer, there is a focus on hydration, but too often dogs don't get the water they need in fall and winter.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — We spend a lot of time talking about how many glasses of water is enough. The key point here is, that hydration is important and not just for us.

"We know as the weather gets cooler, we may not drink as much water and that water is good for hydration and also good for well-being and our skin's health. So this is when, you know, encourage your pet to drink or start adding some wet food into their diet because that's generally about 80% moisture in a really easy way to boost their hydration," said Dr. Danielle Bernal, Veterinarian, Wellness Pet Company.

Making sure our pets drink enough is top of mind on a hike during the summer or when we take them to a dog park to play. But making hydration during the fall and winter probably hasn't been the priority.

With the rain we're going to get in the coming week, mushrooms are sure to sprout. Our vet expert says you need to keep a watchful eye on your dogs, they don't know something could be toxic, they just sniff and eat. Just because temps are dropping doesn't mean the flea and tick danger is dropping too.

"As it gets a little bit cooler, this becomes a real prime time for our fleas and ticks. So again, make sure you're keeping up on that flea and tick prevention," said Bernal.
