Horse Recovering After Being Shot By Teens

"You could tell as soon as they step out the back their eyes get real big and they look back in that direction. So they definitely had some memory of something really bad happening," said Johnson.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The owner of those horses shot in Winston-Salem is sharing her struggle coming to terms with the crime.

She's giving an update on how the two surviving horses are doing.

"First, we didn't think there were any pellets, because we couldn't feel them because of all the swelling, but as they've come down -- she is full of pellets," said Kaye Johnson.

Johnson is the owner of Dixie -- one of three horses shot last Saturday.

"You kind of go into shock. I mean when I -- I couldn't tell you much about Saturday, because when I first got the call it was just like you go blank," said Johnson.

While Johnson's horse Dixie survived Jelly, another horse shot, wasn't so lucky.

"She was the friendliest horse out there you know? She was like the welcome wagon," said Johnson.

It isn't just horse owners mourning.

"That's somebody's family. How would you like it if somebody did that to your family," asked Greg Kandefer, who would sometimes come by and feed the horses.

"For a human being to shoot at a horse in the head and kill it and let it suffer -- there's something wrong with that person," said Melanie Rowton, who lives next to the stables.

Like many, they can't understand how someone could do something like this.

As for the horses, this isn't over for them either.

"You could tell as soon as they step out the back their eyes get real big and they look back in that direction. So they definitely had some memory of something really bad happening," said Johnson.

Although there is anger, and a want for justice, there's also a want for forgiveness.

"I just pray for the boys that this will be a turnaround in their life. And for their families. I can't imagine having police come into my house and haul off my teenage kids. It's rough," said Johnson.
