COROLLA, N.C. — A horse who spent most of his life roaming the fields and beaches of Corolla has died, according to a Facebook post from the Corolla Wild Horse Fund on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
“His story certainly did not die with him; it lives on in his countless offspring and the mark he left on the herd, and in the memories of him that we will share for many, many years to come,” the Corolla Wild Horse Fund said.
The horse, Flint, was one of the oldest horses in a herd being monitored by the Corolla Wild Horse Fund. They said Flint was a “prolific stallion when he was in his prime.”
The herd management team at the Corolla Wild Horse Fund said they noticed Flint had increased drainage from both nostrils and an odor that indicated a tooth infection when they checked on him on Oct. 17.
Flint was brought to the Corolla Wild Horse Fund’s farm the next day and spent time resting his body in the sun, eating ripe persimmons, and receiving scratches around his ears. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund said they administered antibiotics and painkillers to Flint.
When a veterinarian came to examine Flint on Monday, x-rays showed that Flint had no functional teeth left. Flint was also suffering from a sinus infection and had packed organic material where missing teeth once were, according to the Corolla Wild Horse Fund.
Flint was determined to be in his late 30s based on the state of his teeth and other physical characteristics. The horse was laid to rest in the woods at the farm next to his son, Danny.
