GREENSBORO, N.C. — The heat across the country is heading into the Carolinas. Now it's our turn to get in on the heat. It will be hot for several days with the humidity making it feel a bit worse. We deal with this each summer, but it's good to be smart and make sure that you're being safe in the afternoon heat. The WFMY News 2 Weather Team is tracking it.
How hot will it be?
- Our air temperature will rise into the mid 90s on Saturday and Sunday
- We'll stay in the low to mid 90s for temperatures through Wednesday of next week
- The humidity will make it feel hotter, the heat index will be in the upper 90s on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday
What is the heat index?
- The heat index is used to take into account the toll that humidity has on our bodies
- When it's very humid outside, our body isn't able to cool down easily. Sweating is meant to cool us down through evaporating sweat drops on our skin which takes heat away from our bodies. When it's humid outside, the evaporation doesn't happen as much and we can't cool down as easily.
- The heat index will usually be a higher number than the air temperature on hot and humid days. That's why we may say it is 95 but it feels like 100, because that's what your body is fighting against.
