ERWIN, Tenn. — A discovery in Tennessee illustrates just how powerful Hurricane Helene was when it made landfall at the end of September.
Authorities confirmed a buried body in a North Carolina cemetery turned up about 20 miles away in Tennessee. The Yancey County Sheriff's Office said Helene's floodwaters carried the remains from the Whitson Cemetery in Burnsville, NC to Unicoi County, TN in September. The Whitson Cemetery is located near the Cane River.
Officials say the body was buried in Yancey County in 2006. WFMY News 2 is awaiting information about the identity of the body.
