CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-native and business leader R. Stuart Dickson died Saturday at 94. A funeral home obituary confirmed his passing.
Born in 1929, Dickson grew up in Charlotte before graduating from Davidson College. He then moved to New York City to join Goldman Sachs. He returned to Charlotte when his U.S. Army reserves unit was put on activation notice for the Korean War.
After that move, Dickson began working at R. S. Dickson & Co., eventually taking the holdings firm public and later acquiring Harris Teeter, among other businesses.
Dickson's most rewarding accomplishment, according to his obituary, was serving as commissioner and chairman of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Hospital Authority, or Atrium Health.
Dickson also served as Chairman of The Dickson Foundation and was a Trustee of Davidson College, UNC Charlotte, Wake Forest University, and Johnson C. Smith University. In 2000, he was elected to the NC Business Hall of Fame.
Dickson is survived by his wife and four children.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 21, at Myers Park Baptist Church. The service will be livestreamed and will begin at 2 p.m. The family asks that memorials be offered to the charity of your choice in memory of Stuart.
Neither Harris Teeter nor Atrium Health responded to a request for comment.
