'Happy Birthday' Singing Greensboro Man Turns 100

GREENSBORO, N.C. — He's the man known for singing 'Happy Birthday' to others, and now it was Carl Webb's turn - for people to sing to him!

"It's been a great part of my life, because I've been singing all of my life," he said.

Webb turned 100 year old May 13th, and his family threw him a birthday bash, where dozens of his fellow church members from Westminster Presbyterian stopped by, to wish him well.

For years, he's called up every church member at Westminster - whether he knows them, or not - and sings a personalized 'Happy Birthday.'

"He sings happy birthday to everybody in the church every single day," said Webb's granddaughter, Dorian Hyslop, "And to have everybody here is just such an amazing blessing."

"I firmly believe that the reason he’s lived this long is because he somehow discovered that this was his life mission," said his other granddaughter, Lydia, "And I don’t know what it was that made him do this, except for his Christian brotherly love."

"It's been such a great joy to have so many people from the church to come by and say hello," Webb said.

Singers from the Greensboro Tarheel Chorus dropped in, too. It was only fitting for the 'birthday man' himself to get a special serenade, from the group he helped found years and years ago.

"Daddy was one of the founding members of the barber shop chorus of Greensboro," said Webb's daughter, Betsy, "And after family and God, his first love has been barber shop singing. So, to have that gang of guys come in there and sing for him meant the world to him."

He might be 100, but Webb has no plans on stopping his tradition, since music brings him so much joy. He tells us, the key to a long life is managing to stay happy.
