Top 10 Warm Halloween on the way for North Carolina

Plan your costumes appropriately! Mother Nature has a trick up her sleeve

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Halloween is here, and it's about to be a very warm one for our area. Dry and warm weather has been the norm lately and is on pace to continue through Thursday. Our WFMY Weather Team has perspective on just how warm it will be.

Trick or Treat Forecast

It's about time to hit the neighborhoods and grab the candy. This year, you can leave the coats at home. In fact, many of the costumes may make you a bit too warm this go around.

For Halloween on Thursday we are expecting temperatures to warm to near 80 degrees during the afternoon with even a bit of humidity. Of course, most trick or treating happens during the evening.

We'll expect temperatures in the low 70s for the early evening and the upper 60s by the end of the evening. Plan accordingly when dressing for all the events!

Recent Halloween Weather

The last few years have been a bit closer to average. Last year Halloween was cool in the 50s. Prior to that we had a few years in the 60s.

The last very warm Halloween we had was back in 2019 when we hit 80. That's happened just 7 times on October 31st through our history. Sometimes, it can lead to bad weather. In 2019 we had thunderstorms and tornado warnings that impacted Halloween plans. This year we are expecting it to simply be warm and dry.

This Halloween will be our warmest since 2019, and one of the top 10 warmest on record.

Warming October Nights

Over time, October nights have been getting warmer. Notice the trend since the 1970s in the graphic below. There's been about a 5 degree warming trend. This applies to Trick or Treating weather, which overall isn't quite as cool as it used to be.

The warmest Halloween on record is 85 degrees set back in 1961. The coldest Halloween came in 1917 with a low temperature of 27 degrees. The wettest year was back in 1988.
