GREENSBORO, N.C. — On November 11, 1918, World War I officially ended. Now more than 100 years later, we know the historic day as Veterans Day.
Over the weekend, there were dozens of events happening to honor veterans and those who have served our country.
The Guilford County Veterans Memorial held a ceremony on Sunday to honor America's military men and women who lost their lives fighting for our country.
Dozens of people attended the observance, where there was a presentation of colors and speeches from multiple veterans. After the event, we talked to one of the speakers and a member of the ROTC at NC A&T about the meaning of Veterans Day in their eyes.
"The story of our veterans, it's really a story about America. When we look back throughout the 200-plus years we've been a country, and we look at how our country was shaped, that's a big deal,” Master Sgt. James Bavry, who is a senior military science instructor at NC A&T, said.
"Being able to reflect with veterans who've been down this path already that I aspire to be on, it's an honor to be a part of,” Miles Hart, who is in ROTC at NC A&T, said.
This was a big day for the Guilford County Veterans Memorial. It was their first event since the massive amount of damage they got from Tropical Storm Debby back in August.
Susan Danielsen, who's on the memorial's board, said nothing would've stopped them from honoring veterans.
"We're not gonna let a little tropical storm prevent us from honoring our veterans. We could honor our veterans even if that tree was down here right now, we would all gather and pay respect to the servicemen and women who make our quality of life possible,” Danielsen said.
The memorial itself has nearly 800 personalized bricks honoring military members who defended our freedoms.
