GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — A special meeting was called on Monday about money for Guilford County Schools construction and renovations.
At the beginning of the year, The district said it needed more money to complete repairs due to inflation.
GCS has $2 billion for projects, which was approved by voters.
WFMY News 2's Amber Lake sat in on the meeting and explained where we are.
One of the biggest takeaways from the meeting was the discussion about bond money and how the school system wants to be able to use more of it, for maintenance projects.
Guilford County Schools walked through an update on costs and delivery schedules for construction projects they are working on.
They also talked about some of the maintenance needed in a lot of schools across the district.
The capital funds, which are around 10 million, provided before the budget year, cover maintenance needed.
The bond money covers major renovations and new construction.
Schools like Grimsley and Ragsdale High, Southeast Middle, Madison, Frazier, Cone, and Oak View Elementary are set to get HVAC upgrades using bond money.
GCS superintendent Dr. Whitney Oakley said there should be more money available for routine maintenance.
Guilford County Manager, Mike Halford said the challenge now is how to allocate projects across two different funding sources capital dollars and bond dollars.
So far, many security updates have been done using either bond money or capital funds based on the size of the project.
"As it relates to security, these vestibules are in elementary schools, in Middle and High we have the weapon detection system. We have a lot of cameras that we've done both interior and exterior associated with school safety," Dr. Julius Monk said.
Guilford County Chief Financial Officer Don Warn said the County currently plans to issue $180 million in February 2024.
