GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — On Tuesday, Sheriff Danny Rogers reported a scam call going around with someone pretending to be one of his deputies, and to make the call sound even more real, they mentioned Guilford County District Court, Judge Brian Tomlin.
Judge Tomlin learned about the scam and reported it to the sheriff's office.
This scam is similar to a few the office has encountered and reported to the public.
The fake caller stated he was calling from the Guilford County Sheriff's Office and that the victim of the call had failed to show up for jury duty after being summoned by the Clerk's Office.
The caller falsely claimed that local Judge Tomlin had issued an order for the victim's arrest and imposed a $2,000 fine upon the victim for missing jury duty. The fake caller attempted to extort money from the victim by requesting the victim pay the fine electronically or through gift cards to avoid being arrested.
The sheriff's office says they will not use phone calls to compel payments of court fines via electronic means, Bitcoins, or gift cards.
If you ever get a call from someone claiming to be a deputy regarding an arrest or an arrest warrant, you can verify the authenticity of the call by contacting the sheriff's office warrant squad at 336-641-2727.
