Guilford County mother longs for answers five years after son was murdered

Qumara Lee, the mother of gun violence victim, 25-year-old Quenton Harrington, helped organize a unity walk in High Point to honor him and other victims.

HIGH POINT, N.C. — A Guilford County woman, Qumara Lee, has waited five years to find out who killed her son and there's still no answer.

All who knew her son, Quenton Harrington can agree, his life and the lives of other gun violence victims were cut too short.

In order to honor the young man, dozens of people, from loved ones of Harrington's to local police chief, showed up in High Point to walk in his memory.

He was murdered in High Point back in 2019. High Point police said Harrington was found dead after he crashed his car into a utility pole. He was found dead with gunshot wounds. Police say a shooting happened just before the crash.

“Knowing my son… and knowing what the officer told me took place, I could see him rolling down his window trying to help someone and then they shoot him. Like how can you be so cruel?" Lee said.

Lee, alongside High Point Police Chief Curtis Cheeks III walked down South Main Street in High Point, all the way to the laundromat, also on South Main, where Harrington was killed five years ago.

They came together to pray and held a moment of silence, "even though some time has passed, we haven't forgotten about this case," Chief Cheeks said.

He stressed the importance of raising awareness of cases like these in groups.

"This happens far too often and it's important for us as community to work together to minimize the times and opportunities where these things happen," Chief Cheeks said.

It's what Lee is focusing on right now as well, bringing people together. She said her son was a young man who loved unity.

"He would bring our family together, he was the one calling, saying "hey, let's meet up at grandma's house" and so, I have to do that because that's who he was," Lee said.

She said in order to carry on his legacy, she will continue to do the same: bringing those her son loved the most... together.
