Guilford College fans celebrate great season after team falls short

The Quakers lost in the Division III Men’s Basketball Final Four. They were looking for their first national title in 51 years.

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — When you think of the Final Four, your mind doesn't usually go to Greensboro. Guilford College changed all of that by making the Final Four this year.

"Greensboro's here now, Greensboro is here now, we are here and there is nothing else to say, we are here," Guilford College fans, Brandon Crisp and Keith Moore said.

This is so exciting for Guilford fans as the college is a Division 3 school, while many may be focusing on Division 1 schools like NC State, UNC, Wake Forrest or Duke.

Guilford College students, alumni, staff and beyond showed their pride right here in the Triad. It turns out Crisp and Moore are related to player #23, Julius Burch.

"Sorry we couldn't be up in Indianapolis but we are here representing, we're proud of you Julius and go Guilford, go Quakers!" Crisp and Moore said.

Guilford College alumni, Deanna Schlott was also at the watch party for the game, she told WFMY News 2 she's grateful she went to a D3 school.

"As a college athlete myself it's super important that we prioritize D3 athlete's as well. I think that they deserve just as much credit, we work just as hard," Schlott said.

She feels D3 schools shouldn't be looked at any differently than D1 schools because Guilford College allowed her to focus on both sports and academics.

"Division 3 gave me the opportunity to not only be able to play the sport I love but also give the time and attention to the classroom that I wanted to," Schlott said.

At the end of the day, what fans were most excited about, was seeing their team play in a big game.

"I don't care what division you're talking about, whether it's the big boys or us, a national championship is a thrill and a wonderful wonderful thing," Guilford College Alumni, Brooks Haworth said.

"I think it puts us more on the map, you know it's a smaller school but we have a lot of heart, we have a lot going on that a lot of people don't know about but being in the final four really shows what we got," Guilford College Student, Ben Parry said.

Although they didn't take home the win tonight, fans agree, one thing they will always be is... a Guilford College Quaker.
