GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — The Guilford County Commission voted to add new workers to the county's Department of Social Services.
A deadly fire on Grimsley Street that happened about a year ago is what prompted the change. In that fire, three children, all under 5 years old died.
The county approved DSS adding about 30 new workers.
It released an action plan earlier this year after the state found multiple violations with how DSS handled one of the children from that deadly fire — improving staffing was among the top priorities.
The county still needs more case workers to reach state recommendations.
The children who died are survived by three older siblings. They currently live with their grandmother. We spoke with her last week. She said the children are doing as well as can be expected.
"Overall they are doing well, they are coping great. They are just still having issues because they don't know how they are supposed to act. I mean losing three siblings and your mom at the same time; I wouldn't even know how to act. These are children," Grandmother Essie Moffitt shared.
The mother of the children faces charges after police said she left them home alone when the fire ignited.
