GREENSBORO, N.C. — Happening in your community, Guilford County says its animal shelter is full.
In a post on Facebook, they say since space is tight, wait times for Good Samaritans bringing in stray animals may be up to 2-3 hour wait time. They say they are taking in strays still, but we must wait for an open kennel.
They are not the only shelter in the community facing overcrowding. The Forsyth County Animal Shelter report "always at or close to capacity. Post-COVID has wreaked havoc on the animal welfare field," said Kristen Briggs, Director of the Forsyth County Animal Shelter.
The SPCA of the Triad told our team they are reaching max capacity.
The non profit said they typically take in between 70 to 80 animals but with overcrowding they have had to limit that amount.
Founder Brenda Overman shares another looming challenge.
"People think of animals or donating animal food they always think of dog food, but we always need puppy and kitten food the wet food and the dry kitten food too but it seems people forget about the cats," Overman said.
The SPCA of the Triad marked 30 years caring for animals in need.
Overman encourages everyone to adopt but if you cannot take a listen to another way you can help the shelter.
"We need volunteers. We need kind people that want to step up and do not just one thing or cleaning a kennel that can learn to do a little bit of everything," Overman said.
