Greensboro to open warming centers as temps drop

The city activates its White Flag initiative when temperatures—actual or “feels like”—are expected to drop to 32 degrees or below for at least two hours.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The City of Greensboro is activating its White Flag warming centers Wednesday night in response to forecasted low temperatures.

Greensboro Urban Ministry, located at 305 W. Gate City Blvd., will offer overnight shelter for men and women from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. on Thursday, December 12.

For families, Glenwood Recreation Center, at 2010 Coliseum Blvd., will provide shelter for adults with children from 8 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 12. The center will be staffed by the Office of Community Safety team, trained to assist special populations and coordinate services for families as needed.

The city activates its White Flag initiative when temperatures—actual or “feels like”—are expected to drop to 32 degrees or below for at least two hours. The measure is also implemented during severe winter weather events, such as freezing precipitation or high winds, that may pose additional risks to homeless encampments.
